Worcester continues it's winning streak

The English Junior Champion Club - Woodhall Spa GC run by England Golf

Worcester Golf & Country Club have, once again, qualified to represent Worcestershire in the English Junior Champion Club Tournament, which is being held at Woodhall Spa GC on Tuesday 24th & Wednesday 25th August.

The three boys representing the club & Worcestershire are Juna Amin, Henry Thomas & Oliver Smith.

Good luck to the boys and enjoy the experience.

Our ladies played the semi-final  of the Droitwich League this Monday at Burghill Golf Club against Hollywood Golf Club and won. Well done and may the winning steak continue to the final.

Our A team played their Semi-final match at home last Friday, drawn against Rose Hill Golf Club in the Kidderminster Cup Knock Out. Here is the report from Tony Saunders.

Usually a winter competition, Covid lockdowns meant the competition had been delayed and with the recent necessary green’s maintenance work affecting the course, the home draw was not quite so significant.

The opening game between Duncan MacPherson and Brian Heap and Rose Hill's Steve Green and Terry Martin was an unusually scrappy match with Rose Hill winning 2&1.

The last game was won by Mark Carpenter and me against Emmett McNamee and Brett Heath 6&5 which left the middle match as the decider.

Shaun Perry and Paul Newman were matched with Rose Hill's Andy Beard and ex professional Garry Mercer.

The Worcester pair had not got off to the best start and were three down with six to play. Victory looked unlikely, but they dug in and turned the match round, levelling the game on 16. Rose Hill sank a long putt on 17 to halve the hole and with the teams tied after 18, extra holes beckoned.

The 19th was halved, and in the rapidly gathering gloom, Paul hit a great drive down the middle of the fairway on the second extra hole. Rose Hill's tee shot caught the big tree, and faced with a wood into the green, they missed right.

Shaun's approach to fifteen feet applied pressure. Rose Hill's chip was short, and a bogey resulted. Paul cosied the ball to the hole and Shaun dispatched the par putt to secure a great win.

The match was played in a great spirit by all concerned. Thanks to the spectators for their support.

The Final at Droitwich GC on Sunday 26th September awaits.

This year we were in Division A along with The Herefordshire GC, Kidderminster GC, Fulford Heath GC, Redditch GC and Bewdley Pines GC.

The results were as follows:-

2/7/21           (A)       v          The Herefordshire                Won 3 1/2 – 1 1/2

10/6/21         (H)      v          Kiddermister                         Won 4 – 1

22/7/21         (H)      v          Bewdley Pines                       Won 4 – 1

We are the winners of Division A, and will now play the winners of Division B, Hollywood GC, at a neutral golf club – Burghill GC on Monday 23rd August 2021.

Kidderminster Cup A team

Worcester A entertained Hollywood GC at Worcester in the Quarter Final of the scratch foursomes Kidderminster Cup on Sunday 1st August.

With Duncan MacPherson away on County duties, Shaun Perry stepped up to play. In a close game Shaun and Paul Newman lost 1 down to Mark Morton and Joe Roache.

Mark Carpenter and Tony Sanders played solid foursomes golf to win convincingly 8&7 against Terry Lawson and Ian Dale.

Andy Baker and County Seniors Champion Brian Heap eased away on the back nine to a 4&3 win against Joe Ryan and Dave Smith.

Win for Worcester A 2-1 and we now join Worcester B (who had already been successful against Wharton Park.) in the Semi Final draw.

Supporting Prostate Cancer UK

To the members of Worcester Golf & Country Club, I would like to send my huge huge gratitude for hosting me today.
From the first email exchange, the offer of the captain's company to honestly the most wonderful of welcomes it has been incredible.
To walk in to a club as a stranger, on a time scale and be greeted by first the lad (sorry I didn't get his name) in the pro shop expecting me with well wishes and to then meet John and be escorted to the tee with everyone along the way being inquisitive and sharing well wishes was genuinely overwhelming. I'm not sure I've ever walked in to a golf club and felt more welcomed before.
On the course to receive the support and confidence of the members who were offering donations to a complete stranger was again overwhelming.
I want to offer you my biggest thank you of the day, it was truly my highlight round and it was all down to the welcome and John's hospitality, what a treat to fly round and enjoy a beer with you, could have stayed and chatted for many more.
Members donated £75 whilst I played the course. Thank you for your support.
I hope to see you again in the future and thank you again.

Craig Jackson.
